Caregiving and family responsibilities

Why are carers of young adults particularly burdened?

Carers of young adults are faced with multiple burdens because they are often in a phase of life in which they have to fulfil a variety of responsibilities within their family. They might raise their children and have to care for their parents at the same time. Most people are in the middle of their working life and must combine family responsibilities with their employment. When the need for care arises, they may have to become carers too and have to, for example, earn more or take care of children on their own. In addition, there is the psychological burden: the relationship with the carer changes due to transformations in the (family) role with social contacts easily breaking down due to the time demands.

What can you do find relief?

Time for yourself is often neglected. Allow yourself a break even during stressful periods. You don’t need to feel ashamed if you find time for yourself as a carer. Take your time and think about what truly matters to you. You can be choosy. Don’t use free time to fulfil others’ expectations! Ask your relatives or neighbours to help at home for short periods of time to have enjoy some free time. Choose times when the person you are looking after require less care. In some areas, volunteers offer to provide care at home. Sometimes you can also make use of professional care services.

If you miss the opportunity to talk to someone, you could go to a self-help group. If you feel under persistent psychological strain, do not hesitate to look for psychological support.

In the event that your relationship with the person you are caring for is suffering as a result of the new situation, this may be a good reason to contact a couples or family counselling service. They will help you to communicate as equals and find your way into the new family life together.

Being in need of care, your family usually has to cope with less income and high expenses at the same time. Here you will find useful tips on where you can apply for financial assistance. If you find yourself in a very serious financial emergency, debt counselling can also provide support. This is ordinarily provided for free by charities and local communities. You can find some links below.

Caring for someone usually means considerable physical effort. To reduce your efforts, it makes sense to think about aids and modifications (e.g., lifts). You can find out more here.
